Watch any of the world's top golfers play and
you will witness brainpowered golf in action! Focus,
confidence, calm, energy, control....just some of the words
to describe their golfing mentality. In fact it's widely
believed that the game of golf is as much about mental
fitness as it is about physical fitness - ask any good
player. Yet for most of us, we let anxiety, fear, stress,
lack of self-confidence and limiting mind-sets interfere
with our performance - our brains get in the way!
Over
the years, I have had the great pleasure of watching a young
aspiring golfer achieve his big dream of becoming a
professional. His belief that he would do it and his goal to
win a major title one day, is nothing short of inspiring.
He's focused, confident, calm, energetic and controlled both
on and off the course, all the qualities of a golfing
champion.
Jayne Cormie and The Thinking Business

In a recent interview, Andrew
discussed his aims and ambitions as a professional golfer:
Andrew, what has been your primary
focus this year?
"Twelve months ago, I decided to
commit myself to achieving my goal of obtaining a European Tour
Card. I achieved this earlier in the year."
What specific steps did you take to
achieve this goal?
The starting point was to improve the
physical aspects of my game including strength and stamina. I did
this primarily by improving my fitness and strength and enhance my
diet, including stopping drinking! I also put a lot of focus on
developing the mental side of the game.
How did you do that?
I have been working closely with Karl Morris and have had regular
coaching with Pete Cowan (European Tour Coach) and Graham Walker
(English Golf Union Coach). I also read extensively about the mental
aspects of golf and sports psychology, as well as modeling some of
the great players.
What about golf practice?
As well as these coaching sessions, I
spend all my spare time practising in specific areas of my game for
between 8 and 10 hours a day, and at least 3 hours on normal work
days.
How has this helped?
I feel that the improvements I have
made both physically and mentally have been noticeable, with higher
scores than ever before. This was shown at the European Pro Tour
School by achieving a category 8 ranking.
Unfortunately, due to the high cost
of playing in the tournaments (£275 to enter plus £200-400 per week
expenses), I have so far only been able to play in 3 of the 9
events. A key goal is to raise at least £15,000 in sponsorship money
which will enable me to play in more competitions over the next 12
months. The Euro Pro Tour events have a guaranteed prize fund of
£40,000 every week with the winners cheque being for £10,000. These
events are televised on Sky Sports two or three times a week and
they also have a dedicated website (www.pgaeuroprotour.com). This
will give potential sponsors exposure through varying sources of the
media.
What are your plans for the next few
months?
My goals for the next 12 months are
to finish in the top 10 of the North Region Assistants Order of
Merit, to win the Yorkshire Assistants Order of Merit and to win at
least one tournament. I also want to make the cut in the four
remaining Euro Pro Tour events that I will play in 2004, achieving
one top 10 position. I also hope to play Regional Assistants events,
Yorkshire events and Pro Ams in between Euro Pro events.
At the end of the season, I aim to
have had a stroke average of below 72. Over the winter, I intend to
keep improving myself both physically and mentally and to reset my
goals for the coming season. As I said earlier, a key aim is to
obtain sponsorship to allow a full schedule of playing to prepare
myself for going to European Tour School at the end of 2005.
I know I have the dedication and
determination to succeed and will continue working as hard as
possible to achieve my goals.

We will be tracking Andrew's
performance and achievements throughout his career, so check back
regularly to see his progress.
